"Va Va VOOM! Times Two" My Favorite Gold-digging Duo
Out of all the guys I polled...most preferred the brunette.
I used to watch "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"(1953) for the dance numbers and clothes; now I watch it for the comedic wit and by-gone 'studio duo'. Did contract actors have it better? I'll assume NOT since actors aren't just images of fantasy but personaes with business acumen, these days; they wouldn't short-change themselves. But one DOES miss the duos- those studio actors that could give a storyline the 'one-two' punch for box office gold. We have cop-buddies and somehow it doesn't feel the same.
There is so much to LOVE about this film- besides the obvious love affair the camera had with Marilyn and Jane's curves- grade-school millionaires; jewel-generous husbands; a purloin tiara; and the art of 'gold-digging'. That was a time when 'gold-digging' was TRULY a sport: men started 'the game' with stuffed wallets and an eye for beauty; women began with pretty faces and wiles similar to a petrarchan farce. Now that lovely face comes with an MBA or law degree and a copy of your credit report; and nevermind the romantic illusion of being 'his last love affair', because his pre-nup is just his way of saying "maybe, for now" instead of "for as long as we both shall live". A guy or a girl knew what they were getting into back then...it was a magnification of the survival instinct: mansions were the new 'shelter'; jewels and stocks were the new 'fire'; and in a pinch a girl can always consider a pepper poppy CaPeachio's smeared with pate de foie gras and a topping of caviar as sufficient 'food' on a rainy day!
But nothing is 'sport' any longer...women cease to be 'the trophy' sooner than later. With our disposable lives, we have disposable wives. And there has been a more vicious 'upgrade' to the art of gold-digging...wealthy men refer to it as 'strip-mining'.
DISCLAIMER: The author of this post neither condones 'gold-digging' or any variation thereof. The author also does not condone marrying what would be considered a trophy wife- unless SHE is the trophy (wink).
