The Vengeance of BETTE...
"She did it the hard way" Davis!
We petites are spunky from birth; we would not have made it here without a fight! Bette was no exception...Her most pronounced attributes have been immortalized in song ("Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes), but this could not hold a candle to her legend that had already made her eternal.
After being treated like a well-glazed ham- fondled and tasted in the most gluttonous manners all in the name of making sure I was ready, I found myself recalling a seemingly similar tale of misuse told by the mesmerizing Ms. Davis. Later referred to as "the sixth Warner Brother", Bet' failed her first screen test and was subsequently utilized to screen test up to fifteen young men while trying to prove her worth. What being a coerced, love-reclined nymph has to do with The Method is beyond me! Alas, there she was...pinned between twice-hungered young wolves and a studio couch.
I am a good deal more curvaceous than the young B.D. but that is not to brag- it is to prove that a solid mind fastened atop an ample form does not get one ahead either. I still believe I was only invited to the casting call because my mother's 'friend' (we now use the term lightly) couldn't have me, so he made me and four young men act out his fantasy. The cur! Yet there is always Justice in the Universe...
Just as Bet' won her rightful acclaim in "Of Human Bondage" (1934), I too, recently won my revenge against Mr. L's lasciviousness: I auditioned for a theatre production he was sponsoring without his knowledge and, after hearing much praise on my talents, he rushed over to meet me only to meet his present flustering humiliation. His director is an Alpha-female (as I have lately become) and will not let him replace me. 'She is pivotal in this role!' she has said. Now he must suffer watching me play the role of a young woman who tortures a foolishly lustful older man...Lolita!
I will be studying pre-Sexual Revolution femmes in American and foreign films in order to gain that adolescent 'sex and candy' personae. Any other hints? Send them to my email. M.~
